Dermis

(Middle layer)

The dermis sits directly beneath the epidermis. It provides strength, flexibility, nourishment, and sensation.

What it contains:

- Collagen: provides strength.

- Elastin: helps skin stretch and return to its shape.

- Blood vessels: deliver oxygen and nutrients.

- Nerves: detect pain, temperature, pressure, and touch.

- Hair follicles.

- Sebaceous glands: produce oil (sebum).

- Sweat glands: help regulate body temperature.

Important facts:

- It is thicker than the epidermis.

- It has two subdivisions: the papillary dermis (upper) and reticular dermis (deeper).

- Wounds extending into the dermis may scar because of damage to deeper tissue
